Women's Hormone Imbalance

Hormone imbalance can debilitate you. Get acquainted with hormone imbalance symptoms and signs so you can notice when things in your body and mind don’t seem right.

IRREGULAR PERIODS AND HORMONAL IMBALANCE

  • Amenorrhea: an absence of periods for at least 3 months, when the female is not pregnant
  • Menorrhagia: excessive menstrual bleeding
  • Dysmenorrhea: periods occur infrequently or more than every 35 days
  • Anger, irritability, mood swings, depression, and anxiety before and during women’s periods, which can be associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), are normally caused by hormonal imbalance.
  • Abnormal levels of estradiol, testosterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, progesterone, prolactin, and other hormones may contribute to female infertility.
  • Low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism) is a hormonal imbalance that causes fatigue.
Estrogen and Progesterone
Excess Androgens
Low Testosterone
Hormone Problems Starting in the Brain
  • Low levels of progesterone, released by the ovaries, may make it difficult to fall and stay asleep.
  • Declining estrogen levels may be to blame for ‘brain fog’ or difficulty concentrating.
  • Abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and nausea before or during your period may be caused by disturbances in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract that have receptors for both estrogen and progesterone.
  • A decrease in estrogen levels during a woman’s monthly cycle results in increased hunger, making women more susceptible to eat foods that are high in fat, calories, sugar, and salt, making matters worse.
  • A decrease in estrogen levels is a common cause of routine headaches.
  • Falling estrogen levels during perimenopause and a lack of estrogen after menopause may lead to vaginal dryness, making the wall of the vagina thinner.
  • High estrogen may cause lumpy or dense breast tissue, even cysts. Estrogen levels that are too low may cause decreased breast tissue density.
  • Decreased levels of estrogen in perimenopause and menopause are associated with skin aging where the skin gets thinner, becomes drier, less elastic, and less vascular.
  • Researchers found that perimenopausal and postmenopausal women who had lower estrogen levels were more likely to suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) than women who had higher estrogen levels.
  • The loss of estrogen after menopause is associated with bone loss and an increased risk of osteoporosis.
  • Excess estrogen plays a role in breast cancer, ovarian cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), infertility, and autoimmune conditions.
  • As estrogen levels decrease in women who are postmenopausal, they may notice they gain more weight around the abdomen and arms, which may increase a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Acne that does not go away may be due to excess androgens.
  • High levels of androgens may sometimes indicate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which may cause infertility.
  • Low testosterone levels may cause low libido in women.
  • A pineal cyst is a disorder of the pineal gland that may produce symptoms including water on the brain (hydrocephalus), headache, eye problems, and vision problems especially affecting women who are in their second decade of life.
  • The pituitary gland produces several hormones that affect many bodily processes and other endocrine glands.
  • Dysfunction of the hypothalamus may produce many symptoms that may affect your body temperature, mood, hunger, thirst, sleep, fatigue, sex drive, and circadian rhythms. Supplementing hormone levels that are low may help relieve symptoms.
  • Estrogen is believed to have a protective effect on the brain. It appears to positively impact brain chemicals (neurotransmitters), cognition, and the ability to withstand stress. Dropping estrogen levels appear to be associated with an increased risk of psychosis.

If you suffer from any of the hormonal imbalances above, hormone replacement therapy may offer some relief and restore hormonal balance. Our new nurse practitioner, Krystal Lynch, WHNP-BC, has over 10 years of experience in treating women’s hormones.
